GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

Italy is a mountainous country, primarily due to the Alps in the north and the Apennines mountains. It is bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west, the Adriatic Sea on the east coast, and the Ionian Sea to the south. There are about 1000 rivers, 48 volcanoes in which 3 are active, and 450 islands.

Italy has a predominantly Mediterranean climate with mild, sometimes rainy winters and sunny, hot, and usually dry summers.

PEOPLE AND CULTURE

Italian culture is steeped in the arts, family, architecture, music, and food. Home of the Roman Empire. Italy was the birthplace of Opera. Italy has many UNESCO World Heritage sites.

THE FLAG

The flag features three equally sized vertical pales of green, white, and red. white stands for the snowy Alps and other mountain regions, green for the plains and the hills, and red for the blood spilled in the wars of independence.

POPULAR SPORTS

The most popular sport in Italy is football. Italy's national football team is one of the world's most successful teams with four FIFA World Cup victories.

FLORA AND FAUNA

Plant species exclusive to Italy include the Sicilian Fir, Italian Bellflower, Iris, Moltkia suffruticose, a lungwort Pulmonaria, Nuragica Columbine, and orchid Ophrys. The flowers which people love to grow in Italy are Oleanders, Bougainvillea, Jasmine, Crocus, Cyclamen, Bluebell, Violets, Periwinkles, Alpine Pasque Flower, and Spring Gentians.

Large mammals like Marsican brown bear, Pyrenean chamois, Alpine ibex, common genet, fallow deer, mouflon, rough-toothed dolphin, and crested porcupine are found here. On the coasts, dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals can be spotted.

TOURIST ATTRACTION

Milan Cathedral: It is the cathedral church of Milan. Dedicated to the Nativity of St Mary. 3,400 statues, 135 gargoyles, and 700 figures decorate the church.

Grand Carnival, Venice: It is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy. The celebration takes place over ten days in which people dress up and take part in organized parades or simple processions on the street.

Roman Colosseum: The Colosseum is an oval amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome. The Colosseum is over 1,900 years old. Gladiatorial shows took place at the Colosseum

The Leaning Tower of Pisa: It is simply a tower and is famous for the settling of its foundations, which caused it to lean 5.5 degrees. The Leaning Tower of Pisa does not fall because its center of gravity has been carefully kept within its base.
