Short Stories for Kids on Honesty and Greed

Kids short stories

Ravi and Raju were two friends. They grew up together in a small village. Their parents were farmers. Ravi and Raju grew up and did farming too. They continued to be friends and met each other everyday after work and chatted about different things they were doing on the farm.

When Ravi and Raju were both about 29 years of age, there was a huge drought in their village and all their crops became dry.  No matter what they did they could not revive the plants. This was a big source of stress for them.

Ravi’s wife was a teacher and so they could manage their family expenses. While they had stress they were not in as bad a state as Raju and his family. This is because both Raju and his wife worked at the farm.

Raju’s wife often urged him to ask Ravi to help him, but Raju knew that things weren’t great for Ravi either, so he never asked Ravi for money. Raju would often tell his wife,” If Ravi had more than what he needed, he would come forward to help me.” Ravi, on the other hand, was too self absorbed to bother about what was happening in Raju’s life. He honestly had never particularly cared too much about Raju.

One night, Raju in distress prayed and prayed and slept in tears. The next morning, an old man approached him and told him he would give him some seeds that didn’t need much water to grow. Raju could plant the seeds and keep part of the crop for selling and part of it he had to give to the old man. Raju readily agreed to this and thanked God for listening to his prayer.

Raju sowed the crop and in a few days the plants started to grow and he worked hard too. He  and his wife walked to the neighbouring village to get a few pots of water for the crop. Slowly the crop took root and grew and was ready for harvest.

Meanwhile, Ravi had not been doing much. Raju harvested his crop, gave the share due to the old man and got the rest to the market.Ravi saw this and could not believe his eyes. He asked Raju how he managed all this. Raju explained what he had done. Raju was a kind hearted person, he even introduced the old man to Ravi.

Ravi pleaded with the old man to help him out as well. The old man agreed and gave him seeds. He asked for some part of the crop in return for his favour, Ravi agreed to his terms.

Ravi did as Raju had done and in a few months time, the crops were ready for harvest. Once harvested, he went to the neighbouring village market and sold all the crops. He did not give the old man’s share.  The old man got to know of this and when he confronted Ravi, he claimed that the crops had not even grown. The old man couldn’t do much.

The next year too was the year of drought, the old man once again helped Raju out with the seed crop. This year, Ravi could not go back to the old man because he had cheated him the previous year.  Meanwhile, Ravi’s wife had also lost her job and the family had to struggle. Ravi realised his mistake, but it was too late.

Moral of the story:

From this story, we get the lesson that honesty is the best policy. Greed is a bad trait. While Raju had to give some crop as agreed upon, he had help from the old man in tough times. Ravi was greedy and dishonest and so he did not have any help in his tough time
