When they observed closely, the old man kept leaning down, picking something and throwing into the sea. As the boy came closer, he was puzzled to see that the old man was actually throwing the starfish, which had washed up on the beach, back into the sea.

The boy asked the old man the reason for doing this. Old man replied that they had been washed up on the beach. If he did not throw them into the sea, they would die from lack of oxygen. The boy again said, that there were thousands of fish on the shore and how could the old man save everyone of them and how his actions would not make a difference. The old man said that whatever the boy said was true but his actions made a difference to the particular fish that was lucky enough to be thrown back into the sea.

The young boy  understood the wisdom of the old man’s actions and started helping
