Short Stories for Kids on Friendship

Short Story one : Importance of Communication in Friendship

Once in a forest, there lived a frog and a tortoise. They had met when they were small, they had grown up together. Both of them used to finish all their work soon and meet at the bank of the pond and chit chat happily. They loved each other’s company.

One day when chatting they said to each other that they should never get separated in their lives. So, they decided to tie a rop. They tied one end to the tortoise leg and  the other end to Frog’s legs. By doing so, they thought, they would never get separated. They searched for strong and lengthy grass and tied it to their legs.

For a few days, everything went on well. But slowly, they realised that it would be difficult to continue in the same way. But both of them feared to communicate the same with each other, thinking that, it would lead to a break in the friendship. But they repented for their whole lives for taking such a decision, which made them a prisoner in their own cells.

Parenting Takeaway:

There are two take aways from this. One is about the fact that no matter how good a friendship, better to have some personal space. The second one which is an even more important message is that, if something is not working it is better to communicate about it, rather than be silent.

Short Story Two: You dont need to be similar to make friends

In the city of Mysore, in a resitential area, there were a lot of trees. Many birds had made their homes on the trees. It was like a festival of melody in the mornings. The chirpings of the birds filled the air.

In one of the trees, there was a family of crows. Next to the same tree, was a house. On the roof of the house, there was a family of pigeons. The pigeons were beautiful to look at. One day while playing, the crow accidentally threw a twig on the pigeon. It got hurt. The crow apologised for its mistake. From that day, that crow and pigeon became very close friends.

One day, the pigeon’s mother saw the baby pigeon playing with the crow. She got furious. She immediately called the baby pigeon home. Later in the night, the mother warned the baby pigeon not to mingle with the crow. She said that, when they had so many pigeon friends to play with, there was no need to have a friendship with a crow. The baby pigeon convinced her mother by saying that she liked the crow and they shared many things in common. They liked each other’s company and so, she could not break the friendship with the crow. The pigeon continued to play with the crow.

The pigeon’s mom was not convinced.  She  became angry. She said she would not allow the pigeon to be friends with the crow because the crow was so different. At once, the baby pigeon listed three things that were similar – They were both birds, They both flew well and they both ate insects. The mother was taken aback and realised that friendship is about finding things in common and spending happy times together

Moral of the Story:

This is a beautiful story to illustrate that you don’t have to be friends with people similar to you.  It is about finding things in common and being there for each other
