PUNJAB GENERAL INFORMATION

Punjab is a state in northern India. It shares an international border with Punjab, a province of Pakistan to the west. The capital of Punjab is Chandigarh. The state covers an area of 50,362 square kilometres.

Punjabi is the most widely spoken and the official language of the state. People in Punjab are called Punjabis, with Sikhs and Hindus as the dominant religious groups. The state bird is the northern goshawk. The state animal is the blackbuck. The state aquatic animal is Indus River dolphin and the state tree is the shisham.

PUNJAB GEOGRAPHY

Punjab takes its name from the five tributary rivers of the Indus Riverthe  Sutlej, the Beas, the Ravi, the Chenab and the Jhelum. Of these, the first three flow through Indian Punjab and the other two flow through Pakistan.

PUNJAB CLIMATE

The temperature of Punjab changes from one month to another. During summers it is very hot, and winters it can get very cold. The lowest temperature was recorded at Amritsar (0.2 °C).

Punjab experiences three main seasons. They are:

  • Summer (mid-April to the end of June)
  • Monsoon (early July to the end of September)
  • Winter (early December to the end of February)

PUNJAB ECONOMY

The extraction of silk from silkworms is an industry that flourishes in the state. Production of bee honey is done in some parts of Punjab. Punjab is one of the most fertile regions in India. The region is ideal for wheat-growing. Rice, sugar cane, fruits and vegetables are also grown. Indian Punjab is called the "Granary of India" or "India's bread-basket "It produces 10.26% of India's cotton, 19.5% of India's wheat, and 11% of India's rice.

PUNJAB FOOD

One of the main features of punjabi Food is its diverse range of dishes.. Some food items are eaten on a daily basis while some delicacies are cooked only on special occasions. Sarson Da Saag, Tandoori chicken, Shami kebab, makki di roti are some of the famous dishes which are among favourites of many.

PUNJAB CULTURE

Punjab is rich in its culture, it has many elements including music such as bhangra,a form of folk dance. Bhangra dance began as a folk dance conducted by Punjabi farmers to celebrate the coming of the harvest season. The specific moves of Bhangra reflect the manner in which villagers farmed their land.. Today in almost every Indian wedding, this dance form is performed.

They celebrate seasonal and harvest festivals such as Lohri, Basant, Vaisakhi.

PUNJAB MONUMENTS

The Golden Temple in Amritsar is one of the major tourist destinations of Punjab and indeed India. Wagah Border is situated between Amritsar and Lahore, became the main border crossing after partition of Punjab and is known for its elaborate ceremony. It is a tourist attraction. Town Hall of Amritsar is the world's only partition museum. People also visit the Jallianwala Bagh is a historic garden in memory of people who lost their lives in a massacre.
