LION FACTS FOR KIDS

  1. Lions have a muscular, broad-chested body, a short, rounded head, round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of their tail.
  2. A group, or pride, can be up to 30 lions, depending on how much food and water is available.
  3. Male lions grow impressive manes, the older they get. These manes grow up to 16cm long and are a sign of dominance. The older they get, the darker their manes go.
  4. Their manes protect their neck and head from injuries during fights.
  5. Young lions have rosettes and spots on their sandy coats, but these generally disappear as they mature.
  6. Lions are highly adaptable and can live in very dry areas like deserts.
  7. Lions are the only cat species where individuals roar together and even the cubs join in with their mews. Lions’ roar can be heard up to eight kilometers away.
  8. Lions can leap as high as 36 feet. Lions can run at a speed of 81kmph.
  9. Lions need to consume 5kg-7kg of meat every day. Their tongues have sharp-pointed rasp, called papillae, which are used to scrape meat off the bones.
  10.  African lions are found in the Sahara Desert. The Asiatic lions exist in one small population around Gir forest National park in western India.
  11. Lions’ scent marks their territory, using their wee.
  12. Female lions are the main hunters. While they are out the males guard their pride’s territory and young ones.
  13. Lions do most of their hunting at night as their eyes have adapted to the dark, giving them a huge advantage over their prey.
  14. The life span of a lion ranges between 10 and 14 years.
  15. There are thought to be as few as 23,000 lions left in the wild, which is incredibly low!
