REINDEER FACTS FOR KIDS

  1. As the name suggest they are a species of deer.

  2. They are the only species of deer in which both males and females can grow antlers.

  3. Reindeers can live up to 15-20 years in the wild.

  4. They have hollow furs, which help them to trap heat and keep them warm in winter.

  5. They cannot fly, but they are very good swimmers.

  6. Reindeers live in large herds anywhere between 50,000 and 500,000.

  8. Reindeer hooves expand in summer when the ground is soft and shrink in winter when the ground is hard.

  11. At birth, a baby reindeer, called a calf, weighs between 6 and 8 kg.

  12. Their fur is made up of two coats: a woolly undercoat and an overcoat with hollow air-filled hairs.

  13. Unlike horns, antlers fall off and grow back larger each year. Male reindeer begin to grow antlers in February and female reindeer in May.

  14. In North America, the animals are called caribou if they are wild and reindeer if they are domesticated.

  15. Compared to their body size, reindeer have the largest and heaviest antlers of all living deer species. A male’s antlers can be up to 51 inches long, and a female’s antlers can reach 20 inches.
