Short Stories for Kids with Unicorns - Moral of Perceptions and Reality

Once upon a time, in a distant kingdom, there lived a magical herd of unicorns. These beautiful creatures lived in harmony, each relying on the other for support and succour. The Queen unicorn fell sick. Many doctors came to cure her but nothing they prescribed worked.

The Queen’s sister Monika, and her group of friends decided to go to the hut of the oldest unicorn. She was a doctor and had retired to peacefully spend her time with butterflies. She was known to be a bit eccentric and did not like to entertain other unicorns.

Monika was a bit scared, but she knocked on the door of the hut anyway. Many in the village believed that the old doctor used the ways of the old, that is magic! Monika worried that the old doctor would cast a spell on her.

After what seemed like a lifetime, the door creaked opened and a feeble voice said, “ enter”. There was no one behind the door. Monika was very scared. But, she grit her teeth and entered the hut. She asked her friends to stay outside. She didn’t want the old doctor to get annoyed at her giggly group of friends.

Monika entered with caution. The doctor asked her why she had come to visit her.

“My sister is very sick and always on the bed. I needed to find a solution for her illness.”, replied Monika

The old doctor was impressed with the devotion of the younger sister and agreed to visit the queen to diagnose what was wrong. One look at the queen and she knew what was wrong.

The old doctor turned to the unicorn Monika and said, “I know what is wrong and I also know how to cure your sister. But I have to ask for a return favour.”

Monika was scared of this, but she also knew she had no choice.” Please, tell me  old one!”, she said.

“ I want to teach young kids about the old ways!”

Monika was shocked and she stammered, “ You can't possibly hold me to ransom like this. How can I request my brother in law, the king, to allow black magic to be practised in the kingdom.”

The old doctor led out a loud laugh, she said,” Oh dear! You cant possibly believe in that nonsense. The old way is nothing but the use of natural substances and herbs to cure the ill. I want to teach my herbal methods to the young ones, so that our rich unicorn tradition of healing magic with herbs can continue.”

Monika was so relieved to hear this, “ Ofcoursr, not only will I get the king’s permission to teach the old ways, I will also ask the palace to clear out the backyard for you to use as a classroom.”

“Thank you! Now let's get down to the business of healing your sister. I need to make a concoction of 10 herbs. I have 9 of them. One of them grows at the end of the rainbow. You need to get one handful of the leaves from that plant.”

Monika was happy. There was nothing she and her friends loved more than a good adventure, They galloped away at the next light.

The unicorns set out on a long and difficult journey. Along the way, they encountered many obstacles, but they kept going, never giving up. Some of the unicorns stumbled and fell, but the group continued on. Finally, after many days of travel, the unicorns reached their destination. The sight was breathtaking, and the unicorns rejoiced in their accomplishment. They found the herbs and brought it back with them.

The old woman made the herbal potion and soon revived the queen. She also set up her class. Not only did her class fill up soon, the queen and her sister also decided to join the class to learn the old ways.

Moral of the Story:

It is important to take time to understand things that we don’t understand rather than dismiss them as useless. This is especially true of  the traditions of the past, we often tend to dismiss them as hokum, without taking time to fully understand them
