Short Stories for kids on being Trustworthy

A shepherd lived in a village. He had a lot of sheep. He took them out for grazing every morning. The Shepherd’s  wife became ill one day, and he needed to go to the city to get some medicines for her.

'There would be no one to look after the sheep,he reasoned. He then thought of his young son. He told his son , "I'm going to the city to get some medicines for your mother, Ramu. It will take me two to three days to return. So look after the sheep. Stop the tigers and wolves from attacking them. The adjacent forest  is home to a large number of wild creatures. They might kill our livestock. Call the villagers if you need help"

Ramu carefully considered his father's counsel and set off the next day with his flock of sheep for the adjacent hillside. But Ramu was a mischievous youngster. He was feeling lonely and bored and decided to have some fun.. He climbed a high ledge and began yelling, "Wolf! wolf!, help!"

Ramu's cries for aid were heard by the people. They dashed towards the hillside, clutching large sticks in their hands, to assist the kid. When they arrived, they discovered that there was no wolf. The sheep were blissfully grazing, and the shepherd boy was playing the flute.

"Where is the wolf?"

"There is no wolf in this house. I was joking, of course "said the boy, laughing.

The villagers grew angry and returned to their village.

The boy repeated this the next day. The villagers returned to assist the boy. When they discovered that the youngster was lying, they were furious and returned to the village. But, they were really angry.

On  the third day, a wolf really appeared. When Ramu saw his flaming eyes, he became terrified. The wolf huffed and growled. He started approaching the flock of sheep . He began  tremble in terror. "Wolf, wolf, please help!" he yelled. But it was in vain.

No one came to his aid this time. The villager’s  assumed Ramu was up to his old pranks. Ramu's livestock were slaughtered by the wolf. Ramu returned home in tears.

Moral of the Story:

This is the story that lend the phrase," The boy who cried wolf wolf" to English. The moral of this story is that we should strive to be turstworthy. If we lie, people might believe us once or twice but eventually they will stop trusting us.  Finally, we might not get people's help when it is needed.
