Short stories for kids on accepting our flaws

THE CRACKED POT

In a village on the hillside lived a rich merchant. The rich merchant wanted a water bearer for his house. So, he called Rodrix, who lived down the hill, to fetch water for his house needs. Rodrix the water bearer started working for the merchant.

Every day Rodrix collected water from the stream down the hill. He collected water in two pots, which he hung on two ends of the pole. He carried the pole on his shoulders. One of the pots was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water, at the end of the long walk. The other pot had a crack and always delivered half a pot of water.

So, every day the water bearer took the two pots down the hill and up the hill. The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishment, while the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection.

As the day passed by, the perfect pot grew prouder and the cracked pot grew more ashamed. the cracked pot could not hold his sadness. One day he said to the water bearer,” I feel ashamed of being a cracked pot. This crack on my side has made me useless and I end up spilling half the water.”

The water bearer listened to the cracked pot patiently and said, “Today I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path as we return to the merchant's house.”

All along his side of the path, the cracked pot noticed a beautiful blaze of colourful flowers, while the other side was dry with no flowers. As they reached the top of the hill the water bearer said to the cracked pot, “I have always known about your crack and took advantage of it. I planted seeds on the way, that you watered every day. Now notice the beautiful flowers you have made all the way. Without you being just the way, you are, the path would never have changed so beautifully.”

Hearing the water bearer appreciate him, the cracked pot was overjoyed. he doesn’t feel ashamed now. What he thought was a flaw has turned out to be a blessing. The perfect pot was no longer proud. He noticed his path along dry. From that day onwards the perfect pot stopped boasting and the cracked pot started feeling happy and blessed.
