How to teach teamwork to a child

Teamwork is one of the most important skills in today’s world It is very important to teach kids how to team work. Team work is a very important skill for workplace, it increases kid’s empathy and helps them make friends. So the big question in today’s parent’s mind is, how to teach teamwork to a child? Especially because toay’s kids are glued to the screen and hardly socialize or make friends.

These six techniques are useful for parents to teach their children teamwork

1.Sign up for Extra Curricular Activities:

Enrolling kids in extra curricular activities is one of the best ways to get them to work in a team. Try to place them in activities that are done in groups. Group activities such as football, basketball, Cricket or Group dancing are very useful for kids to come together as a team and achieve a goal.

If your child’s school is asking for volunteers for activities, be sure to encourage your child up for these voluntary activities. When kids volunteer, there is minimal adult supervision and they need to learn to organize themselves to get the work done. This is a very important base ground to learn team work and leadership skills.

2. Group Socializing

As a family, it is a great idea to socialize with families with kids. Plan a day out with these families and if you want to make use of this time to help your child learn team work, then you can organize some games. This will make the kids happy and they will get to learn some skills as well.

You can plan sporting activities like throwball and volley ball, You can plan some team- work based outdoor activities. Some grade level wise team work activities are as follows

  1. Follow the Leader for kids below 4 years
  2. Scavenger hunt for kid aged 5 to 7
  3. Middle schooler can play a who am I game with Quiz Cards.

3. Use Screen time Effectively:

While we highly recommend that you reduce screen time for kids, it is a reality of our existence,  The next best thing to do is to select the shows that have team work intrinsic to their story lines.  Look for cartoons that don’t have a single hero but multiple lead characters.

4.Read Stories about working in teams

There are many children’s books that promote team work and have in built team story lines,  We have a few rage wise recommendations for story books that promote team work

For slightly older kids our Indian Mythology stories are treasure troves of working in teams to achive goals. Mahabharat is a great example of how pandavas teamed up with Lord Krishna to fight for their rights. In Ramayana too,  Lord Rama enlists helps of Hanumanji and the Vanras to defeat Ravan

5. Watching Team Sport

 Encourage your kid to watch a team sport like cricket or football. When they watch how teams interact and play together and how that helps the team, they will realize how important team work is

6.Promote Team work at home

Home is a great place where kids learn collaboration.Plan activities at home that encourage this even  more.For example instead of just one parent cooking, you could plan a team cooking event at home. You could plan a meal, divide the tasks amongst the kids and parents and do the activity. This way kids also learn work allocation apart frm teamwork. In addition to this you can encourage your kids when the cooperate with each other and with you more.
