Summer Survival Techniques for Parents

It's the end of the school year!   Summer vacation is here...or is it?

Let's face it: summer vacation might be full of exciting family activities, but it can also mean more squabbling, less compliance with chores, and the dreaded words, "I'm Bored!"

Before you start counting down the days until school resumes, have a look at this list and see if there is anything you would like to try in your home this summer.

For the next few weeks, here's your summer survival guide:

Establish a Routine: Even the most simple structure might be of considerable assistance during the summer.   Most children feel safer when their day or week follows a familiar schedule.

But there is also Be adaptability: Too much planning can interfere with having fun.   Teach your children that it is acceptable to be spontaneous and to adapt when plans change.

Clarify Expectations: Summer is known for its laid-back demeanour. Discuss any changes to chores, curfew, allowance, or spending money with your children ahead of time.

Think together: Parents are not required to be activity coordinators or problem solvers. Collaborate to make a list of entertaining activities or to resolve conflicts. Some children are emotionally fatigued after participating in social activities.  Allow them to recharge by scheduling time for reading, independent play, or naps.

Assist Someone Else: If your children are whining or bored, it may be time to redirect their attention to others.   Encourage them to perform random acts of kindness or to volunteer.

Take a Deep Breath: Not every summer day is sunny and full of laughing.   Instead of being hard on yourself, allow yourself to take a break and relax.

Finding a happy medium is never simple. It's especially difficult when the routine shifts. This summer, keep it simple. When things appear to be going off the rails, prioritise reconnecting with your children. Then, examine this list to determine where areas could be improved.

Summer will pass you by before you know it...No, it really will!
