Short Story on compassion for Kids: Mal’s tale

Chapter 1

My name is Mal. I am a magical fox. I live in a beautiful forest which is surrounded by trees that hold lush green leaves. This story, that I witnessed, is going to be as exciting as can be.

In a small town, near a beautiful forest, there was a girl named Christine. She had many friends. Her best friend was Sally. They both had many things in common, like loving to draw, skate and bake.

Chapter 2

One beautiful Saturday morning, Christine and Sally were sitting in a café and having breakfast. Once they had finished their breakfast, they started walking back home.

Just then, they saw a badly hurt bird sitting on a tree and watched them walk by. Christine thought that the bird was going to need tending to. “I ‘m going to slowly climb the tree and gently carry the bird back down so I can take it home and tend to it. Poor bird! It hurt so badly.” pitied Christine.

“You can do anything but that. What if you fall down and hurt yourself?” asked a worried Sally.

“That won’t happen! Stop worrying Sally!” said Christine, and before Sally could say anything, she scrambled up the tree. Then she gently lifted the bird off its nest and climbed down safely to the ground.

“See, nothing happened to me! There was no need to worry Sally! “Christine assured Sally.

“Well, it could have happened,” said Sally but she was smiling this time. Then they both went home with Sally shaking her head as she was amused with what Christine had done. Christine carried the bird with gentle hands. Her aim was to reach home as fast as she could so she could save the bird. As they were walking home, Sally saw a fox slowly slinking away from the scene.

Chapter 3

Once Christine reached home, she had an idea to put the cute little bird in a lovely home once she cured the little bird. She had actually made the house for her stuffed animals. “I can make another one for my stuffed animals. For now, the poor bird needs a comfortable place to live in.” Christine thought.  Then she went to her mother and asked for some antiseptic liquid and some cotton. Once she got the items, she raced to the bird and started to treat it. Then, she made the bird comfortable in the little house. Once she was done, she asked,” Do you like your new home?” to the bird. She had decided to name the bird “Lucky”.

She told her mother that she had brought a bird from the park to heal it. She said that Lucky needs to stay in Christine’s house until it heals fully. Then it can go back in the wild. Her mother agreed to keep Lucky for a few days until it heals.

That night, Christine went to bed with a happy feeling as she was excited to have a pet. She thought of how animals were laboured and how she badly wanted to stop animal abuse. She was trying her best. This was the reason why she did not keep Lucky in a cage but in a nice and comfortable, little house. If Lucky had escaped by morning, that meant that he felt that he was really healed enough. While thinking all this, Christine fell asleep.

Chapter 4

The next morning, Christine woke up with a great shock. “Mom! Why is Lucky in a cage? Why isn’t he in his little house?” asked a depressed Christine to her mother.

“Honey, I thought you kept him in the little house because you had no other place to keep him. So, I put your Lucky in the cage. Was that wrong?” asked Christine’s mom, surprised at her sudden outburst.

Then Christine patiently explained that putting an animal in a cage was also a type of animal abuse. She said that she had only kept him in the house because he was hurt. She also said that it was okay if the animal ran away or escaped because that is the best thing for them. She also said sorry for her sudden outburst at her mother.

After that, she lifted Lucky out of his cage and put him in the small house. Lucky seemed happy. As Christine was gently placing Lucky in the house, she saw a cute fox peeking through the window.

At that moment, something magical happened. Lucky had hopped out of the little house and transformed into a princess. Christine was astonished. Was she dreaming or was this real? “Thank you, Christine. You have freed me from a curse that an evil witch had placed upon me. Don’t worry I will explain,” smiled the princess, seeing that Christine looked confused.

The princess first told Christine that her name was “Rose”. Rose told Christine that there was a greedy witch who lived in a small hut near Rose’s palace. “The witch was jealous of me because of my beauty. Then, she got so jealous that she turned me into a bird. Only a person who wants to stop animal labour can break the curse. The witch did not think there were any people like that … all she thought was only evil,” said Rose

“And you were kind enough to do that. Thank you! You are the owner of a true and kind heart,” said Rose warmly.

Christine had just realised Lucky was a girl not a boy.“Thank you, Your Majesty. I always try my best to help animals. That is why I am vegetarian,” joked Christine. “Your Majesty, if I may ask you a question, why did you have wounds on your wings, feathers and face?” asked Christine.

“That was because the witch was still jealous. She used a knife to make wounds to make me look bad. You see, I was still beautiful, even in the form of a bird. But you cleaned up all my wounds and all that adds up to your pure kindness.” Said Rose happily.

Chapter 5

Everything was all right now. Rose also said that if the curse was broken, the witch was dead. Later on, Rose and Christine invited Sally over and explained everything. After hearing all this, Sally said,” Christine has such a good heart”. She was proud of Christine. Then they held a party to celebrate that everything was all right. The party was only for the three of them and they had the time of their lives. The only thing that they missed was a mysterious little fox looking at everything that had happened. But not to Rose, Christine and Sally’s knowledge, the evil witch was still alive and even more evil than ever!

 THE END (But maybe not!!!)
