Short Stories for Kids on Determination and Focus

Short Story for Kids - An adventure

Two friends were sitting together in the backyard. It was a lazy afternoon with no desire to play or even move from their spots on the grass.

"What do you think the clouds will be like to touch?” Asked Kartik

"I don't know. Maybe like fog." Said Nishit.

"I would like to touch a cloud once, feel them on my fingertips." Said Kartik dreamily.

"We can try out the old hill. It’s a pretty big one, we might be able to touch a cloud from the top." Said Nishit.

"But no one is allowed to enter that hill anymore." said Kartik.

"Don’t worry. We will sneak in." Nishit said.

The next day early in the morning, both the boys started walking. Half way up the hill, tired, they both sat down on the ground to rest and eat the packed boxes they brought. After sometime, they started walking again. It was evening by the time they reached the top. Their first reaction was pure joy at the view in front of them along with cool wind passing them by.

At second glance they noticed that the clouds they came for are nowhere near the top of the hill. They were disappointed but decided to stay for some time and enjoy the scenic view and calm rustle of the wind.

A few days later, while playing together they heard the sound of an airplane going. Kartik stopped playing and said, “Hey, do you hear that?”

“Hear what?” asked Nishit

“The sound of the plane.” Said Kartik.

“Yeah. I heard that. What about it?” asked Nishit.

“Planes fly high in the sky, in between clouds.” Kartik said excitedly.

“Oh yeah but its windows are closed. How will we touch the clouds?” asked Nishit.

“Umm… yeah. I didn’t think of that.” Said Kartik.

After some pondering, Nishit suggested, “We can try helicopters?”

They both went to meet Mr. Mehta, a retired pilot, to ask if it’s possible to touch a cloud from helicopters.

“It is possible to fly the helicopter in between clouds but it’s very dangerous. The risks are too high so no one would be willing to take it.” Said Mr. Mehta.

They both were disappointed to hear that.

While walking back home, Nishit said, “Looks like we might have to come up with something of our own.” Kartik hummed in response as they walked silently the rest of the way.

Quite some time passed when one day Nishit told Kartik that he had a surprise for him. He then showed him a pair of gloves.

“Why are you giving me gloves? It’s not winter yet.” Said Kartik.

“Wear it first.” Said Nishit handed him only the left hand glove while putting the right hand glove in his own hand.

Kartik wore it and said, “It feels different than other gloves.”

He was still checking the glove when suddenly his hand felt cold. Shocked, he hurriedly removed the glove and checked his hand and then glove. He didn’t find anything.

“What happened?” asked Nishit, hiding his smile.

“I felt cold suddenly.” Said Kartik still inspecting the glove.

“Oh… why don’t you try it again?” suggested Nishit.

Kartik put the glove back on his hand and started checking it once again, flexing his fingers. "Weird’ he thought, because he didn’t feel cold now.

He was about to remove the glove when suddenly he felt something furry on his fingertips. Bewildered, he removed the glove and threw it away, rubbing his hands together.

“What was that?” asked Kartik

Nishit laughed at his reaction while picking up the glove from the floor and said, “It was Lucas, my kitten.”

“What, but how? Lucas was in your arms.” Said Kartik.

“Calm down, I will explain. Put this back on.” Nishit said, handing him the glove.

Kartik hesitated but at Nishit’s insistence, he put it back on as Nishit explained, “I made these gloves in a way that when one glove touches something, the texture and feel is transferred to the other glove too.”

“Look here. I am caressing Lucas with my gloved hand, you will feel it too. When you feel cold, I was holding this cold water bottle.”

Kartik looked at the gloves in awe. “It’s so amazing.”

“That it is” said Nishit in glee, “Now we can touch the clouds without having to fly.”

“Ohh that’s so awesome. But, how are we gonna get the glove to the clouds.” Asked Kartik.

“Don’t worry. I have already talked with Mr. Mehta and he has agreed to get one of his colleagues to attach the glove to the outside of the plane and when it flies in between the clouds, you can feel it too.” Said Nishit.

“Oh, Nishit. You are the best. Thank you so much.” Kartik hugging him.

“I know I am the best. You are not so bad yourself.” Said Nishit laughing.

The next day they gave the glove to Mr. Mehta’s colleague and that evening they sat wearing the glove waiting for the plane to fly in between the clouds.

“Nishit, Nishit. I can feel it. I can feel the clouds. It’s like dipping my hands in a cold fog. It's there but it's not actually there. Do you get it? Here, try it on.” Said Kartik passing the glove to Nishit.

Nishit tried it on and was left in awe.

It was such a surreal experience for both of them that it left them high spirited and confident to be able to achieve whatever they put their heart and mind to.
