Book Review: The story of Dandi March

The Story of Dandi March written by Sandhy Rao and Illustrated by Ranjan De by Tulika Publishers is a snapshot of the Salt Sathyagraha movement. We have always believed that history has to be taught like a story to kindle a child's interest in the subject. This book manages to do just that

Written in child friendly language, this book explains the background of the Dandi March -  Salt as a very basic necessity and how it was unfair to pay tax on it.  It explains the Dandi march and the route that was taken. It also explains in a fairly simple manner how this became a countrywide movement and therefore, all the more impactful. Gandhiji's qualities as a exalted leader are entwined in the story by the little deeds he does- non- violence, kindness, industriousness .

Indian Independence movement is a very important part of our cultural and historical identity and the Dandi March is a milestone movement in the Freedom Movement. Picking this book will help the child in understanding the movement better. Books on history build a sense of pride and patriotism in the child, this book is sure to achieve that by piquing the child's interest in the topic

In addition to that there are various values the child can learn from the book. The illustrations are black and white for the kid to colour it herself. So it also doubles up as an activity book as well. A few colour illustrations would have made the book even more interesting
