Book Review: Dipa Karmakar

In 2016, when Rio Olympics shot Dipa Karmakar to fame, as a family we were closely watching this amazing athlete perform so many gravity-defying moves with a surge of pride in our hearts. We decided to give her example to our little one. Every time we wanted her to run a little more or practice a little extra for the upcoming sports day, her protests would immediately die down when we say, “ Dipa Karmakar aunty would do this so easily” or “ Dipa Karmakar aunty works hard everyday”

“ Dipa Karmakar In Perfect Balance” is a beautiful biography on this Role Model’s life. Dipa lived in Agartala and went to the gymnasium with her Baba, where he was a coach. She started practicing at her Baba’s Gym at the age of 5 . Dipa’s journey from Agartala to Rio couldn’t have been easy. This book highlights the hard work and the sacrifices Dipa had to make right from a young age to become the first Indian female gymnast to compete in the Olympic Games.

This book also explains technical terms in the sport, with simple language and illustrations.

Children learn from everywhere, from the little drop of rain to the ocean. The world is a big classroom for them. The negative fallout of this can be that, sometimes they can learn unfortunate gender stereotypes from society, pop culture and media. Role models can help in shattering the stereotypes.

I highly recommend this book for kids of all ages to highlight what is possible when you focus on your targets and are prepared to work hard to achieve them. Dipa Karmakar’s is a great story to tell our girls to reach for the stars. It is also a great story to tell our boys, so that together they can break shackles for each other!
